IBM P series shutdown process for DB2,Datastage,Essbase and hyperion application in IBM DS4300 storage

IBM Pseris shutdown process

I was working as DB2 DBA ,Unix admin for the DWH project in my previous company. Some of the real time experience and problems which I faced in this project and how I came up with the solution.

Let me explain

We had IBM Pseries 570 with DS3400 storage

NAME VERSION

1. DB2 Server -- ---AIX 5.3
2. ESSBase Server-- ---AIX 5.3
3. ETL Server-- ---AIX5.2
4. Analyzer (hyperion)-- ---AIX5.2

Server HMC DS4300
9117-570 7310-CR3 1722-6OU

1 and 2 are in Higher End
3 and 4 are in lower End

All the servers will be managed by HMC (Hardware Management Console)

Note: If any one of the server is down then we can work with other servers
But if HMC is down we cannot work on any of the servers.

To do all the maintenance activites from HMC directly in fornt of the server is difficult .so it is better to install HMC remote client in your laptop and do the administration anywhere anytime.

Please find the remote client download here.

Processor moments

1 .Dynamic Moment: Here we can move the processor dynamically from DB2 server
To ESSbase server while both are up and running

We have two types of processor moments in Dynamic moments
A. we can move the processor from move command directly to the ESSBase server
B. We can drop one processor from the DB2 server then go to the Essbase server
And can add one processor to it dynamically.
2. OFFLine Moment: Here to move the processor when should shutdown the server
The the server will leave the processor or the processor will be free then we can go to the Analyzer and from the Add command we can add the processor

Note 1:
For each server there should be Min 1 processor and Max 6 processor.

Note2:
By Default the flow of processor is from top to down. It means when ever the server is shutdown (DB2 server or ESSBase Server or ETL Server) the processor will be
Free and can directly added to the Analyzer server.

Shutdown process

1.DB2 server shutdown
a.login to the DB2 dababase from db2 cmd or telnet from db2inst1
b.check all the application using “db2 list application show detail”
c.kill all the application using “db2 force application all”
d.stop the instance using “db2 stop”
e.do the same process for all instance

2. ETL Server shutdown
a.login to the server from telnet using dsadm
b.go the ds-engine using ‘cat /.dshome’
c.go the path bin
d.stop the ds-engin using “uv- admin –stop”

3. Fallow shutdown process to stop Essbase

4.fallow the shutdown process to stop Hyperion

5.Now shut down one by one all the servers from unix using “shutdown”

6.Go to HMC and right click on each LPAR(servers) and shutdown one by one.

7.Then finally shutdown the HMC

8.Switch off the storage

Starting process

1.switch on the storage

2.start the HMC

3.START the LPARS one by one

4.start all the database and applications

Not when the server is re-started all the DB2 and database will start automitacially but if it is not started .fallow this process

DB2 server
a.go the telnet and login with db2inst1
b.start the instance using “db2start”
cdo the same process for all instance

Datastage
a. go the ds-engine using ‘cat /.dshome’
b. start the ds-engine using “uv- admin –start”

Essbase
a. Fallow the start process

Hyperion
a. Fallow start process

Note 3
If we have more than 1 processor in a server and we want to move one processor to another server some conditions are there

1. We cannot directly move the processor from Analyzer to any of the servers above (1, 2, and 3).
2. We cannot directly move the processor from ETL server to above servers (1 and 2).
3. We can move the processor from ESSBase server to DB2 server (Dynamically)
4. We can move the processor from DB2 to ESSBase server (Dynamically)

5. If we want to move the processor from ETL or Analyzer to DB2 we should shout down the server and then we can go the DB2 server and can Add the processor by Add command
6. If we want to move the processor from ETL or Analyzer to ESSBase server we should shout down the server and then we can go the ESSBase server and can Add the processor by Add command
7. If we want to move the processor from Analyzer to ETL server we should shout down the server and then we can go the ETL server and can Add the processor by Add command

Connecting to the Servers

If we want to connect to any of the servers. Fallow the steps

1. Go to the specific server (DB2 or ESSBase or ETL or Analyzer)
2. Right click on the server name
3. Click on the “open Terminal window”
4. Give user name and password to connect.

Other activities on the servers

If we want to do other activities like memory management, Adopter management etc

1. Go to the specific server (DB2 or ESSBase or ETL or Analyzer)
2. Right click on the server name
3. Click on the Appropriate TAB for that type of activities

This is based on my knowledge and if any information is missing or need upgrade. Please let me know.
